Reading White nights, and other stories in English

Best for: B2–C1 (Upper intermediate–Advanced), with read-along support

Reading it at your level: B2C1

White Nights follows a lonely young man in Saint Petersburg who meets a mysterious woman during four magical summer evenings when dusk barely falls. Dostoyevsky's prose, even in translation, is searching and inward — characters reflect aloud on their feelings, hopes, and failures at length. The stories reward learners who are comfortable with emotional and abstract vocabulary and enjoy following a narrator's inner voice.

What you'll practise

  • Extended first-person reflection and interior monologue
  • Abstract emotional vocabulary — 'longing', 'despair', 'tenderness', 'humiliation'
  • Conditional and hypothetical structures expressing wishes and doubts
  • Read along sentence by sentence so you can pace yourself through longer reflective passages
