Best for: A2–B1 (Elementary–Intermediate), with read-along support

Reading it at your level: A2B1

Two children wander into the land of the Snergs — a small, cheerful, enormously strong people who live in a forest full of strange creatures and mild dangers. E. A. Wyke-Smith wrote this in 1927, and Tolkien acknowledged it as one of his inspirations for The Hobbit. The sentences are short and lively, the humour is gentle, and the fantasy vocabulary is introduced gradually enough that new readers can follow without difficulty.
